The heart meridian, one of the twelve main meridians in traditional Chinese medicine, plays a crucial role in regulating the functions of the heart, blood vessels, and mind.

Pathway of the heart meridian:

The heart meridian originates from the heart, meanders through the heart system, passes through the diaphragm, and connects with the small intestine. From the heart system, this meridian ascends to the lungs, crosses the base of the armpit, follows the inner edge of the anterior surface of the upper limb, lies between the Tai Yin and Jue Yin meridians in the hand, runs along the anterior outer edge of the little finger, and finally ends at the outer corner of the little finger’s nail.

  • Notably: The heart meridian has a branch from the heart system that runs along the larynx to the eye system. This explains the close relationship between the heart, throat, and eyes in traditional medicine. For example, excessive heart fire (hot heart) can cause dry throat and red eyes.

The heart meridian performs many important functions, directly affecting physical and mental health:

  • Regulating heart activity: Maintaining a stable heart rate, ensuring blood circulation to nourish the entire body.
  • Controlling mental state: Stabilizing mood and emotions, helping you have a good and deep sleep.
  • Connecting the heart to other organs: Through its connection with the small intestine, the heart meridian contributes to regulating the digestive and excretory systems.
